The Red Devils had fallen behind to Nikola Milenkovic’s second minute opener at Old Trafford, before hitting back with Rasmus Hojlund equalising for the hosts.
Forest restored their lead in the second half with Gibbs-White deceiving Onana with an effort from outside the box.
The Man United goalkeeper moved to his right to keep out the England international’s effort, only for Gibbs-White’s shot to flash past his leg and into the centre of the goal.
Onana’s error was highlighted by Sky Sports pundit Redknapp as the key moment of the match, with Forest quickly adding a third through a looping Chris Wood header.
Bruno Fernandes pulled one back on the hour mark, but Man United were unable to fashion an equaliser.

‘You can’t defend him there,’ Redknapp said. ‘He’s falling backwards, his balance is wrong, he’s got his weight on his heels.
‘I never played in goal, I didn’t even do it in training. But that is fundamentally really bad goalkeeping.
‘You can talk about tactical tweaks all you like, but that goal changed everything. You’re on the back foot.’
Former Man United defender Phil Jones admitted the Man United shot stopper will be ‘disappointed’ by the error, but highlighted how he has been one of their key players this season.
‘He will be disappointed with that. It will be a tough watch,’ Jones said.
‘It’s one of the knuckleball ones, but he should be saving it.
‘He’s made a mistake, but he has been one of the better goalkeepers this season.’

‘I didn’t [think it was going in] at all, to be fair,’ Gibbs-White told Sky Sports.
‘I don’t want to discredit Onana, he’s an incredible goalkeeper, but when I had the shot, I thought he was going to pick it up.
‘But hey, you count them don’t you, I’m happy to contribute to the team.’
Man United are 13th in the table following a sixth Premier League defeat of the season, while Nottingham Forest climbed to fifth with a first win at Old Trafford in 30 years.
