Wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith will open the innings for England in the first ODI of three-match series against the West Indies starting May 29. The series opener is scheduled to take place at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) took to X on Wednesday (May 28) to announce the playing XI for the first match.
“England Men have named their XI to take on the West Indies at Edgbaston in the 1st MetroBank ODI starting on Thursday, 29 May. New England men’s white-ball captain Harry Brook will lead the side while Adil Rashid is set to make his 150th ODI appearance for the Three Lions. Jacob Bethell returns to international duty while Jamie Smith is set to open the batting with Ben Duckett,” the ECB said in a release shared on X.

24-year-old Smith, who has 157 runs to his name in 10 ODIs played so far, will be a specialist batter in the first ODI, and former white-ball captain Jos Buttler will keep the wickets. Smith is getting a chance to play as an opener in the absence of Phil Salt.
Salt, who opened the innings for England in the Champions Trophy 2025, is not picked in the ODI squad and will continue playing in the IPL 2025 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
As many as four players – Buttler (GT), Jacob Bethell (RCB), Will Jacks (MI) and Jamie Overton (CSK) – who were plying their trade in IPL 2025 are named in England’s playing XI for the first ODI. While Buttler, Bethell and Jacks’ IPL teams are still alive in the title race, Overton’s CSK finished at the bottom of the points table for the first time in their history.
England last played an ODI match on March 1, 2025, against South Africa at the National Stadium in Karachi, and in that fixture, the 2019 ODI World Cup winners suffered a defeat by 7 wickets. On the other hand, in their last ODI played on May 25, 2025, in Dublin, the West Indies hammered Ireland by 197 runs.
England’s playing XI for the 1st ODI: Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith, Joe Root, Harry Brook (C), Jos Buttler (WK), Jacob Bethell, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse, Saqib Mahmood, Adil Rashid.
