Amid threats from China and volatile security situation in the Indo-Pacific, Japan has decided to bolster its air power. Tokyo’s defence ministry is seeking over 100 billion yen ($670 million) for the fiscal 2026 initial budget for mass deployment of defence drones. The Ministry could submit a budget request for the upcoming fiscal year, which begins in April, by the end of August, as per reports. Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba in June this year submitted a proposal to the ministry, saying that the government needs to prepare for “new styles of combat” utilizing drones. The Japanese government may opt to buy low-priced drones made in Turkey, which have been used by Ukraine in its fight against Russia. Tokyo wants to deploy these aerial devices to the Japanese Self-Defense Forces as early as possible, The Mainichi reported. While the report did not name the drone in question, Tokyo has been open about its admiration for Bayraktar TB2. Tokyo has closely monitored Ukraine’s counter-offensive with drones to battle the Russian military. Besides the Baykar family of drones, Japan has also shown interest in Turkish defense company STM’s kamikaze UAVs. n18oc_world n18oc_crux0:00 INTRODUCTION3:28 JAPAN PREPARES FOR 2027 TAIWAN CONTINGENCY5:34 JAPAN DEEPENS MILITARY TIES WITH PHILIPPINES
