Amidst the Champions Trophy face-off with the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the Pakistan Cricket Board have another major issue to deal with as the Test Coach, Jason Gillespie has reportedly refused to join the squad ahead of the side’s two-match Test series against South Africa.

According to a report by Cricbuzz, the former Aussie pacer is not pleased with the PCB and is believed to have sent in his resignation, yet to be confirmed by the PCB.

The report suggests that Gillespie is unhappy with the board having kept him out of the loop when it comes to so major decisions taken by the board. Among those include the decision to not renew the contract of his assistant coach, Tim Nielsen.

Gary Kirsten who had joined with Gillespie to take over the white-ball team’s coaching, had also left from his role earlier this October. With Gillespie likely heading out the door, it does not paint a good picture of the current state of Pakistan cricket.

Gillespie’s time as coach has seen a rather mixed set of performances. The side was under scrutiny for losing a home Test series against Bangladesh, which was then followed up by an emphatic series win over England at home.

He was also part of the white-ball side when they created history by winning an ODI series against Australia Down Under after over two decades. However, the PCB decided to hire Aqib Javed as the interim white-ball coach until the end of the Champions Trophy.

The PCB could take a similar approach, with the report suggesting that Javed would also take an interim role with the red-ball team. Pakistan are set to play three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Test matches, which will be factored into the current World Test Championship campaign for the 2023-25 cycle.

Pakistan’s tour of South Africa will begin with a loss in the opening T20I in Durban by 11 runs. Rizwan’s valiant knock proved to be valiant as the skipper struggled to find adequate support from the rest of the batters and will look forward to the rest of the series.
