Star Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, after getting clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE), joined the Mumbai Indians IPL 2025 squad on Saturday (April 5), and on Sunday (April 6), he took part in his first practice session. Bumrah, who has 165 wickets to his name in 133 IPL matches played so far for the Mumbai Indians, looked in great touch during his first nets session.
In a video shared by MI on X, the 31-year-old cricketer from Ahmedabad can be seen bowling a toe-crushing yorker and reducing his MI teammate to his knees.
The clip of Bumrah’s magical delivery is now going viral on the internet.
Bumrah, who last played a competitive match on January 5, 2025, could make his much-awaited return on Monday.
MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene, while speaking to reporters in Mumbai on Sunday, confirmed that Bumrah is available for selection for Monday’s match at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
“He is available,” Jayawardene said. “He is training today, so he should be available tomorrow (Monday, April 7).”
“He arrived last night (Saturday, April 5). And I believe he had his sessions with NCA to finalise that. He has been handed over to our physios. So, yeah, it should be his bowling today. All good, and he will play tomorrow (Monday, April 7),” he added.
According to Jayawardene, the Mumbai Indians team management is not expecting too much from Bumrah since he is making a comeback after more than three months.
“Boom (Bumrah) is coming back from a pretty decent layoff. So, we need to give him that space and not expect too much. But knowing Jasprit, he’ll be up for it. And we’re very happy to have him in the camp. The experience that he brings and that extra voice out there in the middle, chatting with Bolti (Trent Boult), chatting with Deepak (Chahar) or any other younger bowler, giving that advice is also very valuable for us. So, that’s what we’re looking forward to from him.”
During the MI-RCB match on Monday, Bumrah will have a chance to break Lasith Malinga’s record and become the leading wicket-taker in the IPL for the Mumbai Indians. Malinga finished his IPL career with 170 wickets in 122 matches for MI, and Bumrah needs six more wickets to go past that tally.
In his last IPL match for MI against RCB at Wankhede Stadium on April 11, 2014, Bumrah picked up 5 wickets for 21 runs in four overs and won the Player of the Match award.
