Jasprit Bumrah said the ‘fake news’ of him being advised bed rest made him ‘laugh’.
Jasprit Bumrah has come down hard on the reports of him being advised ‘bed rest’ after the back injury he suffered in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He labeled it ‘fake news’ and said it made him ‘laugh’.
Earlier in the day, The Times of India had cited unnamed sources as saying that Bumrah had swelling on his back since returning from Australia. The report added that he was on bed rest till it subsided. It also said that Bumrah had to visit the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)’s Centre of Excellence but a date for his visit hadn’t been set.
Reacting to an aggregator’s post on X (formerly Twitter) about the report, Bumrah said: “I know fake news is easy to spread but this made me laugh 😂. Sources unreliable 😂”
Bumrah picked up a back injury in the final Test of the series against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He didn’t bowl at full tilt in the first innings before being seen heading out of the ground. The team said he had gone for ‘scans’.
He didn’t bowl in the final innings and India lost the Test, conceding the series 3-1.
“Little frustrating, sometimes you have to respect your body, you can’t fight your body. So they’re a little disappointing at the end that, you know, probably missed out on the spiciest wicket in the series, but yeah, that’s the way it is. Sometimes you have to accept what it is and, you know, move forward,” Bumrah said in the presentation ceremony to mark the close of the series.
Multiple reports have been doing rounds since the incident. The BCCI is yet to give an official, detailed report on him, though a few media houses have said that the board is waiting to hear from the medical staff too.
Bumrah is India’s only all-format player currently and arguably the most important. He’ll likely miss the upcoming white-ball bilateral rubbers against England and race to get fit for the 2025 Champions Trophy which begins in February.
