On the first of December 2024, Indian cricket administrator Jay Shah took over as the chairman of the International Cricket Council as he succeeded Greg Barclay in the high-profile role.
Shah has been at the centre of the revolution the BCCI has experienced in recent times since he became the youngest honorary secretary of the Indian apex body back in 2019.
Shah expressed his delight with the role he undertakes and elucidated on the policies the 36-year-old would seek to bring about as the chairman of the ICC as he took charge of the world governing entity.
“I am honoured to take on the role of ICC Chair and grateful for the support and trust of the ICC Directors and Member Boards,” Shah began.
Shah touched upon the crucial juncture the post finds itself in following its inclusion in the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028. Shah also shed light on the situation and promise women’s cricket holds and how he would like to take it forward.
“This is an exciting time for the sport as we prepare for the LA28 Olympic Games and work to make cricket more inclusive and engaging for fans worldwide,” the 36-year-old continued.
“We are at a critical juncture with the coexistence of multiple formats and the need to accelerate the growth of the women’s game,” he added.
“Cricket holds immense potential globally, and I look forward to working closely with the ICC team and Member countries to seize these opportunities and take the sport to new heights,” the former Gujarat Cricket Association chief said.
Shah oversaw the construction of the largest stadium in the world as the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad took shape into what it stands today and has been at the forefront of BCCI’s workings
“I would also like to thank Greg Barclay for his leadership in the role for the past four years and the milestones achieved during that period,” he said. “I look forward to working closely with the ICC team and the Member countries to expand the game’s reach and evolution on the global stage.”
