The demand for a separate Bundelkhand state has resurfaced in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly. The matter came up during the introduction of six languages, including Bundelkhandi, for use in Assembly proceedings. Jhansi Nagar MLA Ravi Sharma seized the opportunity to advocate strongly for a separate Bundelkhand state.

Sharma raised this demand in the presence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Speaker of the Assembly, and numerous other members. He presented the longstanding demand for a separate Bundelkhand state speaking in the Bundeli dialect.

He commenced his speech by reciting a poem by renowned poet Isuri, “Bundelon ki baat suno Bundelon ki bani mein, panidar ite ko pani, aag ite ke pani mein“. He conveyed the sentiment of the people of Bundelkhand, questioning why they cannot form a separate state given their distinct culture, cuisine, and traditions.

The Chief Minister and other members were observed smiling at this statement, delivered by the Jhansi MLA as a gentle rebuke in the local dialect.

The demand for a separate Bundelkhand has been voiced for many years. Initial proponents included former MPs Vishwanath Sharma and Shankarlal Mehrotra. Subsequently, Bhanu Sahay and Kunwar Satyendrapal Singh championed this cause. Recently, BJP leader Raja Bundela also embarked on a yatra raising this demand. The issue has now regained momentum.
