Jimmy Carter is turning 100 on October 1 after spending more than 19 months in hospice care and losing his beloved wife Rosalynn last year.
The former president’s grandson shared a health update this week, noting he is physically diminished but still mentally and emotionally present.
Jason Carter provided the latest during a celebration of his grandfather on September 17 at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta.
The Jimmy Carter 100: A Celebration in Song concert birthday celebration included performances and celebrity guest appearances from Renée Zellweger, Dale Murphy and Killer Mike.
Jimmy Carter’s grandson Jason gave another health update on the ailing former president with just a few weeks until he turns 100
Former Presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama joined for virtual remarks honoring their single-term Democratic predecessor.
‘He’s doing okay,’ Jason said of the former president just two weeks before he turns 100.
‘I mean he’s been in hospice for over 19 months now and he has really physically diminished and can’t do much on his own, but he is emotionally engaged and still having experiences and laughing, loving,’ he added.
The Centenarian birthday milestone will come just over a month before the 2024 presidential election.
Jason previously shared in June during an interview with Southern Living that the Carter family’s 99-year-old patriarch is no longer awake every day.
‘[He’s] experiencing the world as best he can as he continues through this process,’ Jason said at the time.
The grandkid of the former president also noted that there has ‘really been no change’ in health after over a year in at-home hospice care, which he first entered in February 2023.
Jimmy Carter, 99, was last seen publicly at his wife Rosalynn’s funeral in November 2023 (pictured) – and he has been receiving hospice care since February 2023 at his home in Plains, Georgia
During this time, Carter’s wife Rosalynn died at their Plains, Georgia home in November 2023 at the age of 96.
The funeral for his beloved wife was the last time Carter was seen publicly.
‘After 77 years of marriage… I just think none of us really understand what it’s like for him right now,’ Jason told Southern Living in his conversation earlier this summer.
‘We have to embrace that fact, that there’s things about the spirit that you just can’t understand.’
