Democratic donors are warning President Joe Biden that they won’t contribute financially to a legacy project that all former presidents receive.
Biden’s future presidential library could face an uphill battle getting constructed if donors refuse to back the project.
Democrats are enraged that Biden, 82, went back on his word to not pardon his son, and are using this threat as a way to show their displeasure with the president in the final month of his single term, according to a report from Axios.
The Sunday after spending his Thanksgiving weekend in Nantucket, Biden announced he was breaking his years-long promise to not issue a pardon to Hunter, 54.
The president’s son was found guilty of three felony charges after he lied about his drug use on a 2018 federal form to purchase a firearm.
Both before and after the guilty verdict on June11 this year, Biden and his spokespeople repeatedly said that the president would not use his pardon power for his son.
When announcing that he was issuing the pardon, Biden said he ‘wrestled’ with the decision, but claimed Hunter was targeted for political purposes because of his last name.
The walk-back was slammed by both Democrats and Republicans.
President Joe Biden will vacate presidential office by leaving a bad taste in Democrats’ mouths after he is accused of being ‘selfish’ for initially running for reelection and pardoning his son
And now furious Democrats are threatening the clumsy pardon could cost him funds for his presidential library.
‘If they had their s*** together, they would have been doing the work on this over the summer — right after he announced he was stepping aside,’ one well-wired Democrat told Axios.
‘Now, it’s just too late,’ they said. ‘Hopefully they are rightsizing their expectations and budget!’
Some in Biden’s close circle of friends and family are shocked by the fallout and the sheer number of Democrats lashing out at Biden after the pardon announcement.
Sources told Axios that while they expected ‘some blowback’ they were unprepared for the ‘wicked backlash.’
Biden is vacating the presidential office next month and leaving a bad taste in Democrats’ mouths.
Democrats blame Biden for being ‘selfish’ in his final year by both deciding to run for a second term despite pressure not to and then pardoning his son just one month before the end of his term.
Biden was forced out of his reelection bid after his abysmal debate with Donald Trump in June – the same month his son was convicted.
Some Democratic donors are threatening to withhold funds for Biden’s presidential library after he went back on his word promising he would not issue a pardon for his son Hunter
By the end of July, Biden had announced the end of his bid for a second term and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to take his place.
Trump wiped the floor with Harris in the 2024 presidential election, winning 312 of the 270 Electoral College votes needed for a victory.
Without the pressure of needing to win a second term, and after Harris’ definitive loss to Trump, Biden likely felt emboldened to issue the pardon without repercussions on himself or his administration.
Biden spent his Thanksgiving holiday with family, including Hunter, on Nantucket.
The announcement of a pardon came at the tail-end of the trip on Sunday evening.
