Chelsea legend John Terry believes it could be years before Chelsea celebrate another Premier League trophy win. Ever since Roman Abramovich sold the club, the Blues have been in a rebuilding phase. Despite showing promise in recent years, the Londoners are still far from being the best team in Europe.
Former Chelsea captain, Terry recently spoke about the club’s form in 2025. The retired English defender opined that Chelsea still had a lot to do to reach the highest level. “In terms of where we were 20 years ago, we’re not there. But we’re in a transition period,” he said as per The Sun.
John Terry called on the fans to be patient towards Chelsea’s development. He later added that Chelsea were at least three to five years away from winning a Premier League title.
“As ex-players and fans we need to be very patient with that. And I say that with a ‘very’ in front of it because I think we’re three to five years off competing for the Premier League in my opinion,” he said.
Speaking about Chelsea’s transition period, Terry claimed the club has lost a lot of experienced players due to the ongoing revamp. “It was always going to be a process. When you sign young players – and we lost a bit of experience with Thiago Silva and those guys last year – there was going to be a process,” the retired full-back added.
Comparing Chelsea with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, John Terry claimed The Blues were still far from their rivals’ level. The ex-captain, however, was satisfied with the club’s progress.
“Even at the start of the season when things were going well, I expected a little drop from the players just because of that lack of experience and the game time. So I’m comfortable with the direction we’re going in. Man City have been off it this year but they’re still a top side,” he said.
“As long as we keep seeing progression and closing the gap towards Liverpool, Arsenal, Man City because they’ve got to be the targets for everyone,” Terry concluded.
John Terry led Chelsea to one of their most successful eras in the 2000s. He made history at Stamford Bridge winning the Premier League five times and the Champions League once. In his decades-long career, the legendary full-back failed to collect just a single trophy with Chelsea – the FIFA Club World Cup.
