Joshua Kimmich will become a free agent in the upcoming summer.

Joshua Kimmich is not yet ready to share an update about his future at Bayern Munich. The German star is heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid. His current contract with the Bundesliga giants will expire in June. Real Madrid is keen to sign a permanent replacement for Toni Kroos, who retired at the end of last season. Kimmich, who will become a free agent in the upcoming summer, could be a cost-effective option for them.
Bayern Munich remains hopeful about extending his stay beyond 2025. Kimmich earlier revealed that he would confirm his decision this month. He was asked about the situation after Bayern’s narrow victory over SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday, January 25.
“I made a relatively clear statement two weeks ago. There’s no change in the situation now. To be honest, I can’t stand up every three days and give you an update. There will be an update at some point, but I’m not going to comment on it every three days,” Kimmich told German outlet BILD.

Recently, Bayern Munich sporting director Christopher Freund claimed he was positive about Kimmich renewing his contract. He shifted his base to the Bavarian club in August 2015. During his nearly decade-long spell at Allianz Arena, Kimmich has won many trophies, including the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and the UEFA Champions League.
“This is a fundamental decision in his career. He knows exactly what he has at Bayern – the club, the team and the coach. He feels extremely comfortable here. I’m positive that he will ultimately decide to stay with us. We don’t have a specific time frame, but we don’t want to drag it out indefinitely,” Christopher Freund told Sky Germany.
Kimmich was free to discuss a new deal with Bayern Munich from January 1. Coach Vincent Kompany might find it difficult to let go of one of the key players of his team.
Known for his versatility, Kimmich has mostly played as a mid-fielder this season but against SC Freiburg, he lined up at right-back. His leadership abilities have also benefited Bayern, who remains at the top of the Bundesliga table with 48 points in 19 games.
