Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham confirmed on Sunday that he will undergo surgery for a long-term shoulder issue after the Club World Cup concludes.
The England international has been playing with discomfort since dislocating his shoulder in a La Liga match in November 2023 and has been wearing a brace under his shirt.
With Real Madrid focused on winning the Club World Cup, they scheduled the surgery for after the final, meaning Bellingham might miss the start of the La Liga season while he recovers.
“I’ve reached the point where I’m fed up with the brace, and having to adjust it constantly while other players tug on it,” Bellingham told DAZN after Real Madrid’s 3-1 victory over Pachuca in Charlotte.
“I have surgery scheduled for a few days after the tournament, so I’ll get it done and fixed. I’m really happy about that. It’s been a long time coming. I’ve run out of patience with the brace.
“The physio and doctor here have been incredible, helping me to play game after game, but now I’m ready to have a free shoulder and be free of the brace.”
Reports suggest that recovery from the surgery could take up to 12 weeks, which means he might miss Madrid’s first league games and England’s World Cup qualifiers in September against Andorra and Serbia.
Bellingham scored in the win over Pachuca, a day after his younger brother Jobe Bellingham scored for Borussia Dortmund.
The Madrid midfielder said he was motivated to respond after his brother’s goal, especially since it was new coach Xabi Alonso’s first win in charge of Los Blancos.
“Everyone was joking that he’s better than me. I had to do something today,” he added.
“We’re even now, and we’ll see how the rest of the tournament goes.”
