Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham has successfully undergone surgery for a long-standing shoulder issue and is expected to be out of action for at least six weeks, missing the start of La Liga.
Bellingham has been dealing with shoulder discomfort since November 2023, after dislocating it during a LaLiga match. Since then, he has been playing with a brace under his shirt. He chose to delay the operation until after the FIFA Club World Cup to participate in the tournament, where Madrid was eliminated in the semifinals by eventual runner-up Paris Saint-Germain.
“Jude Bellingham has undergone successful surgery today to address recurrent dislocation of his left shoulder. The operation was carried out by doctors Manuel Leyes and Andrew Wallace, under the supervision of the Real Madrid Medical Services. Bellingham will now undergo a period of rehabilitation, prior to returning to training and starting his recovery,” stated the La Liga club.
Under new manager Xabi Alonso, Real Madrid begins their La Liga campaign at home against Osasuna on August 19. Bellingham is also expected to miss some Champions League games and likely England’s World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia in September.
Since his transfer from Borussia Dortmund, Bellingham has made 100 appearances in all competitions for Real Madrid, marking his centenary against PSG last time out. He was signed for a fee of €103 million. In his debut season, Bellingham was the club’s top league scorer, helping them secure the league title and the Champions League, and was voted La Liga Player of the Season. He was included in the FIFPRO World 11 in both 2023 and 2024, and finished third in the Ballon d’Or and FIFA The Best awards in 2024.
Bellingham has represented England at under-15, under-16, under-17, and under-21 levels. He made his senior team debut in November 2020 and has played in UEFA Euro 2020, UEFA Euro 2024, and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
He has only missed starting four matches and has scored 38 goals and provided 27 assists for Los Blancos since his debut season in 2023-2024.
Bellingham is expected to return in time for the first Clasico of the season against Barcelona in late October, though he will likely miss Madrid’s derby clash with Atletico Madrid on September 29 (AEST).
