Canada PM Justin Trudeau Resignation Highlights: Canadian PM Justin Trudeau has resigned from his role as Canadian PM and chief of the Canadian Liberal Party after facing a rebellion from his own party members and also as he grew unpopular because of his policies.
The Canadian leader announced his resignation (local time) at a news conference this morning at Rideau Cottage.
“I intend to resign as prime minister and party leader,” Justin Trudeau told reporters. He said he took the decision to step down after holding conversations with his children and wife.
He said he asked the Canadian governor-general to prorogue the parliament because key decisions were not taken and the institution was ‘paralysed’.
He also called himself a “fighter” and claimed that Pierre Poilievre, his rival and leader of the Conservative Party pipped to defeat his Liberal Party in the next elections, is “not the right” leader to lead Canada, citing his views on climate change and economic issues.
