With her roots in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu, Kalki Koechlin recently revealed that she keeps returning to one restaurant in Ooty for their delicious chilli chicken. In a recent interview, the actor mentioned that this desi chinese dish from a humble restaurant in Ooty is something that she always loves and craves.
In a conversation with Aleena Dissects, Kalki Koechlin shared that she loves chilli chicken from a restaurant called Shinkows in Ooty. The humble eatery is free from all the fuss of a fancy diner, and it focuses on delivering the most delectable Chinese food. She mentioned how the restaurant is a reminder of her childhood and her roots. She said, “It’s not about how fancy it is. It’s about the taste you grew up with. The kind of food that feels like home.”

Ingredients
For Marination:
- 500g boneless chicken (preferably thigh), cut into bite-sized pieces
- 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp vinegar
- 1 egg (optional, for extra crispiness)
- 3 tbsp cornflour
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour (maida)
- Salt & pepper to taste
For Frying:
- Oil for deep or shallow frying
For Sauce:
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1 tbsp chopped garlic
- 1 tsp chopped ginger
- 2-3 green chillies, slit
- 1 medium onion, cubed
- 1 small green capsicum, cubed
- 1 small red capsicum, cubed (optional for colour)
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp red chilli sauce (adjust to taste)
- 1 tbsp green chilli sauce
- 1 tbsp tomato ketchup
- 1 tsp vinegar
- 1 tsp sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
- ½ cup water (for gravy version)
- 1 tsp cornflour mixed in 2 tbsp water (for thickening)
Method
Marinate the Chicken: Mix the chicken with all the marination ingredients and let it rest for 30 minutes.
Fry the Chicken: Heat oil in a kadhai and deep fry the marinated chicken on medium-high heat until golden and crispy.
Prepare the Sauce: In a clean kadhai, heat 1 tbsp oil. Sauté garlic, ginger, and green chillies for 30 seconds until fragrant. Add onions and capsicum. Stir-fry on high heat for a few minutes.
Add all sauces: soy, chilli, tomato ketchup, and vinegar. Stir well. Add sugar, salt, and pepper. Taste and adjust heat. Add ½ cup water if making the gravy version and stir in the cornflour slurry to thicken.
Mix it all: Add fried chicken to the sauce. Toss quickly to coat well. Simmer for a minute. Garnish with spring onions. Serve hot.
