Jamie Carragher reckons Marcus Rashford is hugely responsible for putting Manchester in a “poor position” this season. A product of the Red Devils academy, Rashford has spent nearly two decades at the club. His performance has dipped in recent years. Rashford was not part of the squad that featured in the recent Manchester Derby. A day after the Premier League fixture, the English forward revealed that he was ready to take up “new challenges” away from Old Trafford. His comments seem to have irked Carragher who slammed Rashford for being “critical of the club”.

After missing the derby, Rashford was not selected for the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Tottenham Hotspur. As the reason for his absence, United boss Ruben Amorim referred to the “selection process” as he only picked those who could “cope with the demands of playing a strong game”. Ahead of the knockout match, Carragher criticised Rashford during a discussion on Sky Sports.

“I feel like I’ve been talking about Marcus Rashford for the last week, and I’ve said before, he’s not that good of a player for the amount of time that we talk about him. Wayne Rooney was, David Beckham was, Cristiano Ronaldo was. I’m not for any player coming out and being critical of the club,” Carragher said, as per Goal.

“But for Rashford to do that, to come out without the club having any knowledge of it and just announce he’s put in a transfer request or he wants to leave the club, that leaves the club in a really poor position in terms of negotiating his exit at some stage,” he said.

Carragher further suggested that Rashford should focus on his game to reclaim his position in the matchday squads. “If he really believes he wants to still be a Manchester United player and he still wants to have a great career, you don’t come out with a statement like that. You keep your mouth shut, you battle and you hope that you get a little chance,” the footballer-turned-pundit explained.

Some recent reports claimed that Manchester United had been exploring the options to sell Rashford in the January transfer window. The 27-year-old, however, signed a contract extension earlier in July. As per the agreement, he is slated to stay till 2028.
