He may be aging, but perhaps like a fine wine — perhaps one that wants to do so at the Etihad itself. According to reports, Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne is set to sign a contract extension with the club with talks of the Belgian on a reduced role going forward.

De Bruyne has been under quite some criticism this season, failing to live up to his usual otherworldly standards, nothing up just 2 goals and 6 assists in the 18 games he has starred so far for City.

The 33-year-old Belgian is approaching the end of his contract and could possibly walk out of the club for free. While big-money offers from both the Saudi Pro League and the MLS are on the table, it is believed that De Bruyne might lean towards ensuring an extended stay at the Etihad.

The main reason behind his motivation is his ambitions of playing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup — one he thinks he can achieve by staying and playing at Manchester City compared to other clubs.

According to a report from Mirror Football, City are ready to offer De Bruyne a 12-month extension, but the Belgian would have to take a huge reduction on his current £375,000-a-week wages to make it happen.

City are reportedly looking to offer a £150,000-a-week deal to prolong De Bruyne’s stay at Manchester into an 11th year, but with a healthy package of bonuses loaded on top to keep him satisfied.

Speaking after Saturday’s 3-1 win against Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup, Guardiola said De Bruyne will go down as a club legend, telling BBC Sport: “He’s maybe one of the best three to five players in this club’s history.

“Every time he performs well, I’m the happiest man on the planet. He’s given many, many things to the team and to me, and he’s played really, really well today.”

But when asked if De Bruyne will still be at the Etihad Stadium next season, Guardiola added: “Nobody knows.”
