Kolkata Knight Riders star all-rounder Moeen Ali will not return to India to take part in the remainder of the IPL 2025 season, which is set to resume on May 17 in Bengaluru with a match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and defending champions KKR. According to a report in ESPN Cricinfo on Thursday (May 15), the 37-year-old former England spin-bowling all-rounder has opted out of the remainder of IPL 2025 due to personal reasons.

KKR had signed Moeen for Rs 2 crore in the mega auction last year, and he has played six matches so far in the ongoing season for the Ajinkya Rahane-led side. In those six matches, Moeen has accounted for the dismissal of six batters along with scoring five runs with the bat in two innings.

In addition to Moeen, it has also been reported that West Indies batter and former T20I captain Rovman Powell will also miss the remaining two league matches for the Shah Rukh Khan-owned franchise.

“Moeen Ali has opted out of the remainder of IPL 2025 due to personal reasons. KKR are also awaiting an update from Rovman Powell, who is nursing an unspecified injury that may hamper his participation. Powell had been in Dubai along with the rest of KKR’s West Indies contingent while being in close consultation with the medical staff,” the report read.

According to the website, KKR are looking at signing at least one short-term replacement.

All other KKR overseas players, which include former South African wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock, Australian fast bowler Spencer Johnson and Afghanistan stumper Rahmanullah Gurbaz, have arrived in Bengaluru.

The three-time IPL champions are still alive in the IPL 2025 playoffs race and will resume their training on Thursday at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium ahead of their must-win league match against RCB on Saturday (May 17).

With 11 points after 12 matches, KKR are sixth in the IPL 2025 points table, and they will qualify for the playoffs if they manage to win their remaining two matches by a very big margin and only one team out of Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants finishes with 15 or more points. If that happens, then KKR will finish fourth in the league table and feature in the eliminator match scheduled on May 30.
