FC Barcelona’s request to register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor was rejected by the RFEF, Spain’s football federation and the La Liga authorities on Saturday due to wage cap considerations.

“The Monitoring Committee agrees not to grant the prior approval or the definitive licence requested by FC Barcelona for the players Daniel Olmo Carvajal and Pau Victor Delgado,” the RFEF said.

Olmo, who started his career at the La Masia academy and left the club at the age of 16, has made 16 appearances for Barcelona this season and scored six goals.

Olmo returned to Catalunya following a €60 million deal, remained unregistered in the first two matches of the season as Barcelona reportedly failed to meet La Liga’s financial fair play rules, leading the league authorities to reject the player’s registration. The 26-year-old, however, was granted a temporary registration until December 31, 2024, as the club relied on a rule which allowed them to use up to 80 per cent of the salary of an injured player to acquire the license. Andreas Christensen who was sidelined due to an Achilles issue came to the rescue.

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick expressed his disappointment over the situation of Olmo and Victor ahead of the judgement stating that, “If I am honest, I was not happy about the situation, and the players are not happy about the situation.”

Barcelona stand third in the La Liga table with 38 points from 19 games. Arch-rivals Real Madrid are placed atop the standings with 43 games from 19 outings as well, but could be leap-frogged by cross-town nemesis Atletico Madrid, who are just two points behind Los Blancos with a game in hand.
