Liberal candidate Lee Jae-myung is set to win South Korea’s snap presidential election, with over 85% of the votes counted. The election, held exactly six months after Lee Jae-myung made headlines for defying military cordons to vote against a surprise martial law decree, marks a dramatic political comeback for the former governor.

His main opponent, Kim Moon-soo of the conservative People Power Party, conceded defeat and extended his congratulations to Lee Jae-myung.

The snap election was called amid ongoing political unrest, triggered by the controversial martial law attempt in late 2024. Lee Jae-myung’s defiance of the decree solidified his status as a key opposition figure and energized liberal voters across the country.
