Indian skin deserves personalized care, grounded in science and suited to its biology

For Indian skin, acne isn’t just common, it’s complicated

Acne affects millions across the globe, but for Indian skin, the concern runs deeper and often lasts longer. While we typically associate acne with teenage years, new research reveals a much broader reality for Indian women. For Indian skin, acne isn’t just common, it’s complicated. While many skincare solutions have been built around global standards, experts are now urging Indian consumers to look inward and address the very specific biology of their skin.

Dr. Aparna Santhanam, skin expert and dermatologist, ITC Dermafique says, “Indian skin is uniquely predisposed to acne, and global skincare often doesn’t account for that. We have oilier skin, larger pores, and higher sebum secretion, all of which increase the likelihood of breakouts.”

One lesser-known factor?

The significantly larger pore size and higher pore density in Indian skin. Indian Skin Health Report by Dermafique reveal that Indian skin has pores that are almost four times larger and nearly five times more dense than Chinese skin. This structural difference doesn’t just impact how skin looks, it changes how it behaves. Larger, more numerous pores are more prone to congestion, inflammation, and ultimately, acne.

And yet, only a small percentage of Indian women identify large pores as a concern just 7%, according to the same study. This mismatch between skin needs and consumer awareness can lead to skincare routines that ignore one of acne’s biggest triggers.

“Pores are often an afterthought in acne care, but they play a central role in how breakouts start,” Dr. Santhanam explains. “If we want better outcomes, we need to understand and treat the root causes, not just the surface pimples.”

So, what does a pore-conscious, acne-fighting routine for Indian skin look like?

Dermatologists recommend gentle cleansers with salicylic acid to exfoliate and unclog pores, non-comedogenic moisturizers to maintain hydration without adding oil, and lightweight toners that help refine skin texture. It’s also crucial to protect the skin barrier — over-cleansing or aggressive treatments can strip the skin and backfire.

Indian skin deserves personalized care, grounded in science and suited to its biology. With the right information and personalized solutions, managing acne can become less of a struggle — and more of a skin-smart strategy.
