Liberals have hit out at Donald Trump after he vowed to prosecute election ‘cheaters’ if he wins in November.
The former president threatened to target, ‘lawyers, political operatives, donors, illegal voters and corrupt election officials’ in a rant on Truth Social.
It came as he reiterated his false claims about election fraud during his unsuccessful run for office in 2020.
His remarks enraged left wing commentators, who accused the presidential hopeful of ‘publicly promising to lock up his political enemies’.
‘I together with many Attorneys and Legal Scholars, am watching the Sanctity of the 2024 Presidential Election very closely because I know, better than most, the rampant Cheating and Skullduggery that has taken place by the Democrats in the 2020 Presidential Election. It was a Disgrace to our Nation!’ Trump wrote on Saturday.
Donald Trump has vowed to prosecute election ‘cheaters’ if he wins in November
‘Therefore, the 2024 Election, where Votes have just started being cast, will be under the closest professional scrutiny and, WHEN I WIN, those people that CHEATED will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the Law, which will include long term prison sentences so that this Depravity of Justice does not happen again.’
‘We cannot let our Country further devolve into a Third World Nation, AND WE WON’T!
‘Those involved in unscrupulous behavior will be sought out, caught, and prosecuted at levels, unfortunately, never seen before in our Country.’
Among those to hit back at his pledge was Kamala Harris spokesman, Ammar Moussa.
‘Donald Trump told us he wants to be a dictator on day one. He said he wants to terminate the Constitution,’ he wrote on X.
‘Now he’s publicly promising to lock up his political enemies. And, now, he has the blueprint and Supreme Court to let him do whatever he wants. Take him seriously.’
Prominent Democrat lawyer Marc E. Elias, who recently joined Harris’ team, blasted Trump as ‘desperate’
Prominent Democrat lawyer Marc E. Elias, who recently joined Harris’ team, also joined the criticism.
‘Donald Trump is desperate because he is going to lose this election,’ he wrote.
‘Let me be clear: We won’t let Donald Trump intimidate us. We won’t let him suppress the vote. We won’t let him subvert the election. We won’t let him cheat. We will fight and we will WIN.’
Meanwhile liberal journalists including CNN’s Edward-Isaac Dovere and NBC Capitol reporter Garret Haake expressed concern.
‘A few days ago, Trump said he lost the 2020 race “by a whisker.” Now he is spending his Saturday evening vowing “long term prison sentences” for anyone responsible for him losing, if he wins again in November,’ Dovere said.
‘In a lengthy Truth Social post, Donald Trump escalates his threats to prosecute political opponents – now vowing “long term prison sentences” for anyone who “cheated” in the 2020 or 2024 election,’ Haake wrote on X.
Ammar Moussa warned Trump’s threats should be taken ‘seriously’ and accused him of aspiring to become a dictator
Trump is currently a defendant in two criminal trials over alleged election interference which he denies.
He is accused of pressuring Georgia’s Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to try and find additional votes to overturn the result of the election in the state.
He has also been accused of involvement in a plot to send fake electors to the Capitol to fraudulently declare him the winner in various states and pressuring his Vice President Mike Pence into accepting them over the electors certified by each state.
