The mother of Pete Hegseth, US President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for Defence Secretary, accused him of mistreating women over the years and exhibiting a lack of moral character.
The email was written in 2018 and was made public by The New York Times weeks before the new administration takes over in January next year.
Pete Hegseth’s Mother’s Strong-Worded Email
“On behalf of all the women (and I know it’s many) you have abused in some way, I say … get some help and take an honest look at yourself,” Penelope Hegseth wrote in the email, adding that she still loved him.
“I have no respect for any man that belittles, lies, cheats, sleeps around and uses women for his own power and ego. You are that man (and have been for years) and as your mother, it pains me and embarrasses me to say that, but it is the sad, sad truth,” the email further read.
Pete Hegseth’s Mother Apologised To Son After Email
In a telephonic interview with The New York Times on Friday, Pete’s mother said that she had got back to him immediately on the email apologising for her previous email. She said that she had written the original email “in anger and with emotion” when he and his wife were undergoing a divorce.
She defended Pete and disavowed the feelings she had expressed in the first email relating to his character and how he treated women stating that it was not true.
Stating that publishing the contents of her original email was “disgusting”, she said, “It has never been true. I know my son. He is a good father, husband,” as per The New York Times.
Concerns regarding Hegseth’s treatment of women have surfaced in recent weeks following his selection by Trump. This matter is anticipated to face significant scrutiny during the Senate confirmation hearings.
Pete Hegseth, a Fox News host and Army veteran, was nominated to serve as Secretary of Defense by President-elect Donald Trump. Announcing the nomination on social media, Trump had praised Hegseth as “tough, smart, and a true believer in America First.”
