Argentine World Cup-winner Lionel Messi helped MLS side Inter Miami to a 2-1 win over Atlas on Thursday in Round 1 of the Leagues Cup at the Chase Stadium, Fort Lauderdale.
Miami struck through Telasco Segovia and Marcelo Weigandt, both set up by Messi, on either side of Rivaldo Lozano’s solitary goal for Atlas.
After a scoreless first half, Messi laid it on a platter for Segovia in the 58th minute of the game as Inter Miami broke the deadlock. However, the Herons were pegged back just ten minutes later as Lozano’s strike made it 1-1.
With the match pacing towards its ultimate conclusion, the eight time Ballon d’Or winner made the difference yet again as he orchestrated a move alongside Uruguyan Luis Suarez to set up Weigandt, who eventually netted the winner, in the the sixth minute of stoppage time to give his ide the win.
Miami, who were held to a 0-0 draw in their previous outing against FC Cincinnati with Messi watching from the sidelines due to his one-gam ban following his decision to skip the MLS All-Star match, bounced back to winning ways with the return of the magician from Rosario.
