Seems like the American Dream will not end yet for Lionel Messi, as the latest reports suggest that the Argentine is set to extend his contract with Inter Miami to stay with the David Beckham-owned MLS side till the end of the 2026 season.

Messi has been on an absolute tear, living his best life, since arriving in the MLS in 2023. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is seemingly happy in Miami and hopes to extend his current deal for another year, despite multiple rumors about a potential move back to Barcelona.

The Argentine’s current contract with Inter Miami ends later this year in December. It has been reported by GOAL that both parties are now hoping to reach an agreement for another 12 months to mirror the structure of a regular MLS season.

The new contract is supposedly being constructed to help Messi remain in optimum physical shape to aid him in competing at the 2026 World Cup in the USA, whilst also wrapping up a complete season in Miami.

There were questions as to whether Messi would return to the national team for a sixth iteration of the tournament, but a new deal will prolong his career for at least 18 months – and ensure that he is at least on the pitch for the tournament, due to be held primarily in the United States.

Previously, Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas also reassured fans and followers that the club was looking to retain Messi through the 2026 season to have the Argentine grace their new stadium, which is under construction.

“I expect that within 60-90 days we’ll have to determine all of this. My hope has always been – and everything we’re doing – is to see Messi play at our new stadium in 2026. Hopefully, that happens.”

There has been no official confirmation about a contract extension from either Messi or Inter Miami yet.

For now, the 37-year-old will be part of the Herons’ squad, who are currently second in the Eastern Conference, when they take on the Chicago Fire in the MLS this weekend.

Just a couple of days back, Messi scored a brace to lead Inter Miami to the CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinals after a dramatic three-goal comeback against LAFC.
