Accidentally stained your favourite white shirt with lipstick while getting ready? Don’t panic! Removing red lipstick stains may seem difficult, but with the right method and tricks, it can be surprisingly simple. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get rid of stubborn lipstick stains and make your clothes look as good as new.
Step 1: Check the Garment Tag
Before you begin, always read the care label on the garment. It will tell you whether the fabric can be machine washed or needs dry cleaning. Also, check the recommended water temperature as some clothes may get damaged in hot water.
Step 2: Act Quickly
Start cleaning as soon as you notice the stain. The longer you wait, the more the oils in the lipstick will settle into the fabric, making it harder to remove.
Step 3: Scrape Off Excess
Gently scrape off the top layer of lipstick using a blunt knife, an old ATM card, or a spoon. Be careful not to rub, it might spread the stain.
Step 4: Apply Dishwashing Liquid
Apply a tablespoon of liquid dish soap to both sides of the stained area. Don’t rinse yet. Let it sit on the fabric for at least 30 minutes to break down the stain.
Step 5: Soak in Warm Soapy Water
Fill a bucket with warm water (as recommended on the garment tag), add a little dish soap, and soak the item for at least an hour. For best results, let it soak overnight.
Step 6: Gently Scrub the Stain
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently scrub the stain from the outer edge towards the centre. This helps avoid spreading. Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove any remaining soap.
Step 7: Wash Normally
Wash the garment in a washing machine or by hand using warm water and a stain-fighting detergent. You may also add oxygen bleach or half a cup of baking soda if available.
Step 8: Air Dry Only
Do not use a dryer, as heat can set any remaining stain permanently. Let the clothes air-dry on a line and check the spot once dry. If the stain is still visible, repeat the entire process.
Lipstick stains are stubborn but not impossible to remove. With timely action and simple items like dish soap, baking soda, and a brush, you can restore your clothes easily at home. If all else fails, consider taking the item to a trusted dry cleaner.
