Virat Kohli scored 100 runs from 111 balls for India on Sunday, February 23, to seal a memorable six-wicket win for the Rohit Sharma-led side over Pakistan in the Champions Trophy 2025 Group A match played at Dubai International Cricket Stadium. During his stay at the crease on Sunday, the former India captain scored 7 fours. He added 69 runs for the second wicket with Shubman Gill (46) and 114 runs for the third wicket with Shreyas Iyer (56). For his superb show with the bat in Match No. 5 of the Champions Trophy 2025, Kohli won the Player of the Match award.
Apart from leading India to a big win in Dubai and taking them closer to a spot in the semifinal, Kohli broke multiple batting records.

Kohli became the fastest batter in the world to score 14,000 runs in ODI cricket on Sunday. The former Indian skipper came into the match with 13,985 runs to his name in 298 ODIs, and he broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record by crossing the 15-run mark with a boundary on the second ball of the 13th over of the run chase bowled by Haris Rauf. Kohli completed 14,000 ODI runs in his 287th inning, whereas Tendulkar achieved the same feat in his 350th inning. Overall, Kohli is the third batter after Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara to score 14,000 or more runs in the 50-over format of the game.

Kohli completed his half-century in the match with a boundary on the first ball of the 27th over bowled by Naseem Shah. He needed 62 balls to cross the 50-run mark. The half-century was Kohli’s sixth 50+ score in 15 Champions Trophy matches, and it also helped him take the joint No. 1 position in the list of batters with the most 50+ scores in the Champions Trophy. Shikhar Dhawan, Sourav Ganguly, and Rahul Dravid have also crossed the 50-run mark six times in the Champions Trophy.

Whereas Kohli has 5 centuries and 12 fifties to his name in the ODI World Cup and 1 century and 5 fifties in the Champions Trophy.

Kohli broke Ricky Ponting’s record of 27,483 runs and became the third leading run scorer in international cricket on Sunday when he reached the 81-run mark by taking two runs on the last ball of the 36th over bowled by Haris Rauf. During his 17-year-long international career, Ponting played 560 matches across formats and scored 27,483 runs for Australia and ICC. Kohli, on the other hand, has 27,503 runs to his name now in 547 matches for India.

Kohli completed his 51st ODI century for India with a boundary on the third ball of the 43rd over of the run chase bowled by Khushdil Shah. The century helped Kohli extend his world record of most hundreds in the 50-over format of the game, and he also became the first Indian batter to score a century against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy. Before Kohli, the highest individual score by an Indian batter against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy was 91 by Rohit Sharma.

Kohli became the first batter to score a century against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy and ODI World Cup. The unbeaten 100-run knock in Dubai on Sunday helped Kohli extend his tally of runs to 433 in nine matches against Pakistan in ICC ODI tournaments which is the most by any batter. He has 224 runs to his name in five Champions Trophy matches and 209 runs in four ODI World Cup matches. He broke Rohit Sharma’s record of 370 runs.

In addition to the above-mentioned batting records, Kohli also became India’s most successful fielder in ODIs on Sunday. By taking Naseem Shah’s catch on the fourth ball of the 47th over of the Pakistani innings bowled by Kuldeep Yadav, Kohli extended his tally of catches in ODIs to 157, which is one more than Mohammad Azharuddin’s record of 156 catches in 334 ODIs. Only Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene (218) and Australia’s Ponting (160) have completed more catches than him in the 50-over format of the game now.
