India will face England in a five-match Test series. The series opener is scheduled to take place at Headingley in Leeds from Friday (June 20). Shubman Gill will captain the Indian team for the first time in whites, and England will play under the leadership of star all-rounder Ben Stokes. The upcoming five-match series will be India’s first red-ball assignment since the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
During India’s first away series of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle, players from both teams will have a chance to break multiple records.
Here’s a look:
(*) Jos Root has completed 208 catches in 153 Tests played so far. If he manages to take at least three more catches in the upcoming five matches, he will break Rahul Dravid’s world record of 210 catches and become the most successful fielder in Test cricket.
(*) Root has scored 2846 runs in 30 Test appearances against India. He needs to score at least 154 more runs to become the first batter in the world to score 3000 runs in Test cricket against the Indian team.
(*) Root has 13,006 runs to his credit in 153 Test matches, and if he scores at least 373 runs in the five-match series against India, then he will go past Ricky Ponting’s tally of 13,378 runs and become the 2nd leading run getter in the five-day format of the game.
(*) In 64 WTC matches for England, Root has scored 5543 runs, and if he scores at least 457 runs in the upcoming five-match series, then he will become the first batter in the world to score 6000 runs in the WTC.
(*) Root needs 142 runs in the upcoming five Tests to become the first English and overall fourth batter after Ricky Ponting, Mahela Jayawardene, and Kumar Sangakkara to score 4000 runs in international cricket against India.
(*) Root has scored 10 Test centuries against India in 30 matches played so far. Only Steve Smith of Australia (11) has scored more Test centuries against India than Root.
(*) Jasprit Bumrah has 37 wickets to his name in nine Tests played against England on English soil. If the 31-year-old pacer from Ahmedabad manages to take at least 12 wickets in the upcoming series, then he will become India’s most successful Test bowler against England in England.
(*) Shubman Gill will make his Test captaincy debut for India on Friday (June 20) in Leeds. The 25-year-old right-handed batter will become the first cricketer from Punjab to lead India in the five-day format of the game.
(*) With 145 wickets to his name in 35 matches, Bumrah is India’s most successful Test bowler in SENA countries, and he needs to dismiss two more batters in the upcoming series to break Wasim Akram’s record of 146 wickets and become the most successful Asian Test bowler in SENA countries.
(*) Bumrah has picked up 10 five-wicket hauls in WTC. If he manages to take at least two more fifers in the upcoming series, then he will break R Ashwin’s record (11) and take the No. 1 position.
