Liverpool superstar Trent Alexander-Arnold has reportedly agreed to join Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer. According to talkSPORT, he will leave Anfield after agreeing on personal terms over a five-year deal worth more than £ 220,000 per week with the Spanish giants.
According to the report, the England international has been in discussions with Real since January. Carlo Ancelotti’s side are said to have kept Liverpool in the loop throughout, and have been informed of Alexander-Arnold’s final decision. It’ll be a significant blow to Arne Slot’s Reds, as the right-back will move on a free transfer, thanks to his long-term contract ending after the season.
Liverpool were said to be in negotiations with the defender for months to convince him to stay. However, it is now almost certain that the 26-year-old will be playing in the La Liga next season.
It’ll be understandably drastic news for the Liverpool faithful. Alexander-Arnold is not only a boyhood Liverpool fan but one of the best players in the world for his position.
He helped Liverpool win the Premier League and Champions League under Jurgen Klopp’s much-revered reign and has already contributed enough to Slot’s title charge in the Premier League this season.
The last time Alexander-Arnold spoke in depth about his future, he mentioned wanting to create a legacy in Merseyside.
“I have always said I want to captain the club,” he told Sky Sports. “That is a goal of mine, whether that happens is out of my hands. The most important thing is always trophies. I want to win trophies. We were close to the title last season and we got a cup. The [quadruple] was on for a while I suppose. This season we are looking really good, it is still early days, but we need a lot of consistency. It will be difficult but we are looking to win as many trophies as we can.”
At Real Madrid, he’ll unite with his best friend Jude Bellingham, while also ending the side’s search for a right-back. Dani Carvajal ruptured his ACL earlier in the season and is recovering from a long-term injury. Lucas Vazquez has regularly featured there in his place the 33-year-old’s contract expires in the summer.
