Despite weeks of negotiations over an extension on his contract with Liverpool, no agreement has been reached between the two parties. Amid the ongoing contract drama, a Spanish outlet has reported that the left winger is reportedly positioning himself for a switch to Barcelona.
Liverpool forward Luis Diaz is reportedly pushing for a Barcelona move as his contract extension negotiations continue to stall. The 27-year-old Colombian forward has been a top performer for the Reds in the last two years. Hence, Liverpool coach Arne Slot sees him as a key player and has been actively involved in helping extend his five-year contract. Despite weeks of negotiations, no agreement has been reached between the two parties. Amid the ongoing contract drama, Spanish outlet Antena 2 has reported that the left winger is reportedly ‘positioning’ himself to join Barcelona.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick is considering strengthening the club’s attack by adding Diaz to the squad. The ex-Bayern Munich manager sees the 27-year-old Colombian as a key piece for his scheme. Flick’s interest in the winger also aligns with the club’s Sporting Director, Deco’s views. He sees Diaz as an ideal option for the near future.
Diaz arrived at Anfield from FC Porto in January 2022 and has been a top performer for Liverpool since. He signed a five-year contract with the Premier League leaders that binds him to the club until 2027. With more than two years left on his contract, Liverpool may consider getting a handsome fee for the young forward if he moves to Spain. Diaz has featured for Liverpool in 22 matches this season. With his nine goals and three assists, the Colombian has been decisive in his club’s impressive league campaign.
While Diaz may prefer moving to Barcelona, landing a successful deal will be tricky for the Blaugranas. The Antena 2 report claims Diaz is valued at €80 million, which is likely well beyond Barcelona’s budget. The La Liga giants will also face stiff competition for the player’s signature from other top European sides such as Paris Saint-Germain. The Parisians are reportedly also looking to consolidate their left wing. Securing a deal for Diaz will add more depth to PSG’s offence.
Amid the transfer speculations, Diaz will be looking to continue building himself at Liverpool by getting more play time in the upcoming fixtures. The young Colombian will hope to make the starting XI as his side travels to London this weekend to take on Tottenham Hotspur. A victory on December 22 will see Liverpool extend their lead in top place by five points.
