A grand Mahashivratri fair has been organised in Junagadh, Gujarat, where thousands of devotees and saints from across the country have gathered. One unique feature of this fair is that the saints attending it smear their bodies entirely in ash. But have you ever wondered the reason behind this practice is?
Why Do Saints And Sages Apply Ash?
If you’ve ever observed sadhus closely, you might have noticed that they always cover their bodies with white or grey ash. Is this just a tradition, or is there something more profound behind it?
Chitteshwaranand Bapu, a renowned saint from Junagadh, explains that ash holds great significance for sages and saints.
“When a person becomes a sanyasi, the guru applies bhabhuti (ash) on their body. The sanyasi consider this bhabhuti as their parents, and this bhabhuti reminds them of their sacrifice and devotion to God,” he says.
Why Does Lord Shiva Like ‘Bhabhuti’?
Chitteshwaranand Bapu says Lord Shiva is known as Bhootbhavan, which means he is the one who applies the final form of everything—ash—on his body. Bhabhuti symbolizes the impermanence of the world. “It reminds us that every human body will eventually turn to ash, reinforcing the idea that instead of getting caught in worldly illusions, we should focus on worshipping Lord Shiva and guiding our lives toward spiritual fulfilment,” he adds.
Significance Of The Junagadh Mahashivratri Fair
Mahashivratri is one of the most important festivals in India, dedicated to Lord Shiva. However, the Mahashivratri Fair in Junagadh holds special significance for the saints and sages. Here, they follow unique traditions, such as lighting a Dhuni (sacred fire), applying Bhabhuti, and chanting specific mantras.
During the fair, the sadhus keep the Dhuni burning for five consecutive days, and they apply the ash that comes from this Dhuni on their bodies.
Spiritual And Scientific Importance Of ‘Bhabhuti’
Bhabhuti holds spiritual value. It is considered sacred and is believed to have several health benefits. It is said that the ash contains elements that purify the body and provide a cooling effect when applied to the skin.
Additionally, it is known to aid meditation and protect from negative energy. This could explain why sadhus cover themselves with it entirely, as they immerse themselves in devotion to Lord Shiva.
