Major airlines issue statements over cancelled holidays amid Lanzarote flooding

Lanzarote was hit by heavy storms over the weekend, as resorts and roads were submerged by floods.

Some hotels were left without power and services across the island were affected as a state of emergency was declared following the torrential rainfall, which one British tourist described as feeling like ‘Armageddon’.

And now Tui has cancelled a ‘small number’ of holidays to the Spanish destination ahead of the Easter bank holiday.

A Tui spokesperson said: ‘Due to the lack of alternative accommodation on the island during the busy Easter period, we unfortunately had to cancel a small number of holidays to Lanzarote.

‘Customers were able to receive a full-refund or amend to another Tui holiday with a re-booking incentive.

‘As always, the safety of our customers and colleagues is our main priority, therefore Tui resort teams are working with the local authorities to find customers currently in impacted hotels alternative accommodation or return flights back to the UK.’

Jet2holidays has also warned some hotels in Lanzarote have closed.

A Jet2holidays spokesperson said: ‘Due to the severe weather conditions that have affected parts of Lanzarote, a small number of hotels have contacted us to let us know that they are temporarily unable to accept arrivals due to the impact of the adverse conditions.

‘As always, we have been making decisions with the best interests of our customers in mind, and we have contacted affected customers to let them know their options.

‘Our flights programme is continuing to operate as normal.’

At the weekend, shocking footage emerged from tourists across Lanzarote showing brown muddy waters sweeping through the streets, leaving vehicles and properties unreachable.

Citizens and holidaymakers were forced to wade through the streets which became deep, fast-flowing rivers, while others took shelter on balconies and higher land.
