Major HIV, hepatitis warning after Fresh Cosmetic Clinic in Sydney is raided by health authorities

Aussie clients of a cosmetics clinic have been urged to get tested for blood borne diseases after the business allegedly breached infection controls.

Fresh Cosmetic Clinic, formerly located on busy George Street in Sydney’s CBD, was raided by health authorities earlier this month.

NSW Health and the Health Care Complaints Commission (HCCC) issued public health warnings over allegations of misconduct.

The clinic allegedly breached infection controls, used expired medication on clients and used phoney registration certificates of qualified medical practitioners.

Investigators allege unqualified employees administered drugs such as Botox, dermal fillers, hyaluronic acid during cosmetic procedures.

Fresh Cosmetic Clinic closed on Wednesday after the HCCC imposed a interim prohibition order which prevents it performing any health services for eight weeks.

NSW Health urged clients of the clinic who had injections or underwent any invasive procedure (such as breast implants, facial or nasal line carving) to see their GP as soon as possible and ask to be tested for blood borne viruses.

People who contract blood borne diseases may show no symptoms for years, director of South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Public Health Unit, Dr Vicky Sheppeard warned, calling it a ‘silent infection’.

‘Blood borne viruses can be spread between clients where injections or invasive procedures are carried out without stringent infection control,’ she said.

‘There are effective treatments for hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.’

NSW Health is continuing to work with the HCCC to consider whether any other action needs to be taken in relation to the clinic.

The investigation was initially sparked by complaints about the clinic and the staff.
