Make In India: Google Likely To Shift Pixel Production From Vietnam Amid Tariff Concerns

Google Pixel phones are made in Vietnam but the Trump tariff push could force the company to reconsider its India production plans.

The Trump tariff hikes are slowly making an impact on the global situation and it seems Google is also looking to change its strategy with India in focus. Google has started making the Pixel 8 models in the country since last year, but reports now suggest the company could extend the production plans to more models to reduce its dependence on Vietnam in the next few years. 

The report from ET this week talks about the possible tariff concerns that is likely to come as a big boost for the Make in India ambition and get more brands to make devices locally. 

Google Pushes For India With Tariffs In Mind 

The report claims Google is in talks with Dixon Technologies and Foxconn who will be entrusted with production of the Pixel phones, which could include the flagship models too. Apple has been gradually increasing its dependence on India to make iPhones and now even AirPods are being shifted here, Google is likely to follow suit, which helps the company avoid major tariff sanctions and keep running the business as usual. 

The latest Pixel 9a model also comes with a Made in Vietnam badge, which is also the case with the Pixel 9 foldable and the 9 Pro variants. Halving its support from the country and realigning its focus on India for future production will aid Google’s cause to keep the prices competitive even if the customs tax continues to be added to the final cost.

To be fair, US President Trump wants these companies to set up shop in the country, and not look at other regions for their setup, which is why the tariffs are being adopted in the first place. But the country needs a robust infrastructure and a skilled manpower ecosystem to make it happen, something that even Apple chief Tim Cook has highlighted previously.
