Footage shared on social media showed a man setting fire to a book, believed to be the Quran, and holding it up as it burned.

In a shocking incident, a man allegedly attempted to set ablaze the Quran, the holy book of Muslims outside the Turkish embassy, who was later attacked by a man.

As per the reports, the incident took place on Thursday afternoon near the Turkey consulate situated at Knightsbridge.

Footage shared on social media showed a man setting fire to a book, believed to be the Quran, and holding it up as it burned. He was seen waving the burning book outside the consulate’s perimeter, drawing reactions from bystanders.

In another video, the man can be seen lying on the road being violently kicked by another man. The second individual then appears to produce a weapon and attacks the man lying down on the road.

The victim was later taken to hospital where he is receiving treatment for injuries sustained on his fingers. As per the reports, the man did not receive any stab wounds.

Meanwhile, the police said that they have arrested the attacker and the investigation is underway.

A statement from the Metropolitan Police said, “Police were called at 14.11hrs on Thursday, 13 February to Rutland Gardens following reports of a man being assaulted. The victim was taken to hospital with injuries to his finger. He did not receive any stab wounds. Officers attended within minutes and arrested a man on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and grievous bodily harm.”

As per the media reports, the man who attempted to burn Quran believed to be Turkish origin. According to British media, an X account, believed to be run by attacked, has been posting a commentary of the incident. The same account also wrote that ‘he was attacked’ after his so-called protests.

In an earlier post, he said that he was going to carry out a protest in memory of Salwan Momika, a Quran burner in Sweden, who was killed in Södertälje, Stockholm recently during a live broadcast on TikTok.

Earlier this month, Swedish-Danish politician Rasmus Paludan also set ablaze to Quran in protest of the murder of Momika.

The 2023 Quran burnings made the balance between free speech rights and rules protecting ethnic and religious groups into a major issue for Sweden, its Nordic neighbours and other European countries.
