One feels nothing but pride whilst donning the captain’s armband of their beloved club. And that is exactly the responsibility that veteran Bernardo Silva has undertaken for Manchester City this season, calling it ‘one of the biggest honours’ of his career.

After a trophyless campaign last season, City’s commanding 5-2 win over Juventus, a result that not only secured their place in the Club World Cup last 16, felt like a turning point.

“We’ve always believed we can win any competition,” said new skipper Silva.

“Obviously, it’s just one game, but we’re happy that the performance was the way it was. It shows that we’re improving, we’re coming back to the levels and to the standards that we got people used to at this club.”

City’s display in their final group stage match hints at bigger ambitions, with Silva looking ahead to a potential shot at the CWC title in New Jersey on July 13.

But for him, it’s not just about winning this tournament — it’s about setting the tone for the year ahead.

“What happened last year was quite disappointing for all of us. We want to change, we want to be better. Today was a great performance, and it shows that we can do it again.”

New signings Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, and Rayan Ait-Nouri fit in seamlessly, bringing fresh energy and skill to a team evolving after the departures of veterans like Kevin De Bruyne and Kyle Walker.

Recently named club captain, Silva is embracing the responsibility of guiding the next generation.

“It’s probably one of the biggest honours of my career. I’m going to start my ninth season at the club. We went through a lot of fantastic moments and some disappointments as well. All that experience, I will try to pass it to the younger guys.”

But he’s quick to stress leadership isn’t just about one person.

“It’s about all of us helping each other…. I’m counting on Ruben, Rodri, Erling, and everyone else to share that load. Together, we can achieve great things.”

With players like Omar Marmoush and Savinho now settled and contributing, there’s a fresh, dynamic feel to the squad. For Silva, the team’s evolution is part of a natural cycle.

“It’s part of life. I’m going to talk about players who were so important for this club and left. Like Vincent (Kompany), like David Silva, Fernandinho, Kun Aguero, Yaya Toure.”

“The club always finds new solutions, a new generation of players that has to keep putting this club on the right path up at the top.”
