Manchester City defender Nathan Ake underwent a successful surgery on a fractured foot on Monday after coming off against Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup and will be ruled out of action indefinitely.

The 30-year-old was replaced at halftime on Saturday and now faces another spell on the sidelines.

City were also without John Stones and Manuel Akanji due to injuries last time out, and neither is expected to return for several weeks.

“This has been such a frustrating season for me, but I have now had a successful surgery on a fracture in my foot, which has been bothering me for months,” Ake said on Instagram.

“I am looking positively to the future. Rest and recover now, see you soon Cityzens and thank you for your support.”

Guardiola did little to downplay his concerns in his post-match press conference, admitting that City’s defensive situation is far from ideal:

“Now again we have central defenders out. I think we are going to miss Nathan. I’m so grateful to the club for bringing Vitor and Khusanov to the club. Otherwise, we would not have any chance to qualify for the Champions League next season or fight for the FA Cup; we would have just Ruben.”

Guardiola expressed some relief that at least Stones needn’t require any surgery but announced again that the defender will be out for a substantial period.

“No, no surgery. No,” Guardiola said. “He (Stones) can be recovered during eight to ten weeks without surgery.”

Ake has struggled with a succession of injuries this season and has made only 18 appearances.

Six other defenders have played more minutes for City this season – Josko Gvardiol (3,252), Rico Lewis (2,671), Manuel Akanji (2,490), Ruben Dias (1,954), Kyle Walker (1,159 before joining AC Milan on loan), and John Stones (1,134).
