Manchester United have reportedly enquired about the potential availability of Manchester City’s goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, as coach Ruben Amorim continues his influential summer rebuild after the club’s horrible last season. As United fell flat in the Premier League to end 15th, their lowest-ever finish in the last five decades, and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur, the club has been extremely busy during the pivotal transfer window ahead of the 2025-26 English Premier League.
Having already made the bumper signings of Bryan Mbeumo, Diego Leon and Matheus Cunha, the former champions have also made links with several other attacking options, according to reports. The Athletic on Thursday, July 31, suggested that the Red Devils are keen to have one or both of Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko in their revamped squad.
The rebuild seems to have spanned over the goalkeeper discussions now. With question marks hanging over the injured Andre Onana, Amorim has cast his eyes on City’s goalkeeper Ortega. The club is understood to have contacted the player’s representatives, according to a report by Football Transfers on Wednesday.
The 32-year-old Ortega is currently under contract with Pep Guardiola’s side until the 2026 summer, but he is also mainly treated as a backup to Ederson since arriving from Arminia Bielefeld in 2022. Ortega has played 56 times for City and could enjoy a first-choice status for United if the deal materialises and Onana leaves. It must be noted, though, that United haven’t officially made a bid to City officials for his services.
An impactful save that denied Spurs’ Son Heung-min during a 2-0 away win in City’s title-winning campaign in the 2023-24 season is recalled as Ortega’s defining moment, as he made sure Arsenal couldn’t hold on to their top spot on the table.
Speculations of Ortega joining United have also spiked since City have been on a push to boost their goalkeeping choices. While James Trafford has re-signed from Burnley, Marcus Bettinelli has also arrived as a fantastic backup. Journalist Fabrizio Romano said earlier this week that writing could be on the wall for Ortega’s City career. “Manchester City have informed Stefan Ortega that he can leave the club this summer following Trafford’s arrival,” he said.
