Manchester United are reportedly making attempts to offload Casemiro in the January transfer window. The Brazilian midfielder has not been getting enough game-time at Old Trafford since Ruben Amorim’s arrival. His lack of games has led Manchester United, reportedly, to approve Casemiro’s potential departure. They hope to sell the 32-year-old in the final days of the winter transfer window to help usher in a new era. As per a report from Manchester Evening News, the Premier League giants are said to be using the services of ‘several’ agents to find an ideal suitor for Casemiro. They hope to reach an agreement before the transfer deadline on Monday night next week.
Casemiro is one of Manchester United’s biggest stars who arrived at the club from Real Madrid in the summer of 2022. The defensive midfielder was signed for a fee of £70 million on a four-year deal. In the last three seasons, the Brazilian has struggled with injuries that have impacted his form. He currently finds himself at the bottom of the central midfield pecking order behind the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Christian Eriksen, Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte.
Casemiro was a favourite pick in the playing XI under Manchester United ex-manager Erik ten Hag. With Ruben Amorim looking in different directions, Casemiro has been an unused substitute in eight out of Manchester United’s last 10 fixtures in the English top flight. He has not played a full 90 minutes under Amorim in any competition, starting only twice in 18 games under him.
Given the circumstances, Manchester United feel that keeping Casemiro at Old Trafford is a waste of limited resources that could otherwise be reinvested. His £300,000-a-week deal occupies a significant chunk of the club’s overall wage bill. With the cost of the player spread across the length of his contract, Manchester United will have to secure a fee of £22.5 million before the January transfer deadline. They will have to avoid a loss under the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules.
Casemiro has been constantly linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League with reported interest from clubs like Al Nassr. Despite months of speculation, no deal has been confirmed as Manchester United continue to run out of time.
