At the Gujarat State Boxing Championships, Karan Pipaliya’s bout was stopped after being deemed unfit to continue following which he collapsed.

In a tragic incident at the Gujarat State Boxing Championships, a teenage boxer was declared brain dead on Monday. Karan Pipaliya, a 19-year-old boxer from Surat, taking part in the men’s 63.5kg category, squared off against Harshvardhan Rathod but the bout was stopped after the third round with the former being deemed unfit to continue.

According to The Times of India, boxing selector Dushyant Patel claims Karan was given medical assistance after he collapsed and added, “If Karan felt he was not in a position to continue, he should have withdrawn from the bout.”

The daily reported that Karan is suspected to have suffered a brain hemorrhage and underwent surgery at a private medical facility but with his condition worsening, the boxer was moved to SIMS hospital.

“When he was brought to Surat, he was brain dead. Karan is under life-support right now. Though he is in a brain-dead condition at the hospital, his family hopes to bring him back,” the doctor treating Karan at SIMS Hospital was quoted as saying by TOI.

Karan’s father Bharat Pipaliya claimed there weren’t enough ambulances at the event and said his son was taken to the hospital in a private car.

“The event had 150-odd participants but there were not enough ambulances. I learned that my son was taken to hospital in a private car as there was only one ambulance. If there had been an ambulance available, my son could have received prompt treatment and could have been saved,” Bharat said.

“I request the organizers to have adequate ambulances to ensure that such a thing doesn’t happen again. Maro Chirag buji gayo, bija koi no na bujvo joie (My child is gone, this should not happen to anyone else’s son),” he added.

Karan’s mother Rita Pipaliya said her son was taken to the hospital nearly 90 minutes after being injured. “I accompanied him to the selection meet in Surat with my younger son and nephew. I wanted to accompany him to Mehsana but he refused, saying all the facilities needed were there at Mehsana. So, I didn’t go. He suffered the injuries at 2.30pm but was taken to hospital at 4pm,” she said.

She also claimed that the hospital “took long to complete the formalities for treatment in Mehsana.”
