Will Mason Greenwood consider taking legal steps against Manchester United? The question emerged after Benjamin Mendy beat Manchester City in a wage battle to receive his unpaid salary. The Premier League club stopped paying Mendy in 2021 when the footballer was arrested on charges of sexual assault. He won the legal battle last year after a retrial of the case. That’s when Mandy claimed that Manchester City had “deducted” his monthly wages “unauthorisedly.”

The French international approached an employment tribunal which gave the verdict in his favour. Mendy demanded around £11m without tax. After winning the legal war, he will now receive the majority of the amount. According to a report by the Sun, Greenwood has been encouraged to tread a similar path and sue Manchester United.

The English forward was arrested on sexual assault charges in January 2022. Greenwood was also accused of sexual harassment and controlling and coercive behaviour towards a woman. He was immediately suspended by Manchester United. The charges against him were dropped later but Greenwood was never taken back to the squad.

Greenwood spent the last season at the Spanish club, Getafe, on loan. He finally secured a permanent move to Marseille where he reportedly earns £70,000 per week. As per the Sun report, Greenwood has yet to receive £9 million in wages from Manchester United.

A source told the outlet, “This is something that has been on the cards ever since criminal charges against Mason were dropped. The club has noted the Mendy case and the potential implications it has for them. But the two cases are fundamentally different. Mendy was suspended without pay by City, whilst Mason was suspended on full pay. If he were to launch legal action it would be for a loss of potential earnings.”

The report suggested that Greenwood’s representatives were not happy with Manchester United’s decision to release him. They feel the event has affected the 23-year-old’s emerging career. In February last year, Nike ended its sponsorship tie with Greenwood.

Before joining Marseille on a £30-million deal, Greenwood played 129 matches for Manchester United and netted 35 goals across all competitions.
