In interesting turns of events, search engine Google has seen a huge spike in web searches in India regarding ‘legal immigration,’ ‘H1B visa’ and ‘US birth citizenship’, following Donald Trump’s mega victory in the United States (US) Presidential elections.

According to Google’s Trends section data, searches around immigration and H1B visa witnessed a massive surge on November 6, when the Republican candidate took a substantial lead over his rival Kamala Harris, reported Indian Express.

In India, the biggest concern following Trump’s victory is the potential impact on immigrating to the US, after the President-elect drummed up anti-immigration rhetoric in the run up to the elections.

What Indians Searched The Most?

Indians in a huge number searched for ‘legal immigration’ on the Alphabet’s search engine- moments after Trump was emerged as winner- from virtually no search interest a month before. The people in Punjab led the search for the query on Google, followed by those in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana and Kerala.

People likely to be upset from the onset of Trump’s second innings as President, have also searched for phrases like ‘Trump legal immigration,’ ‘legal immigration under Trump’ and ‘Stephen Miller’.

The President-elect has appointed Miller, known for his hardline stance on immigration, as Deputy Chief of Staff. He played a central role in many policy decisions, particularly on immigration. It is expected that rejections for visas like H1B – which many skilled Indians rely on to work in the US – could go up.

The search engine also witnessed a massive spike for searches related to H1B visa on November 6. The phrase was searched the most by people living in Telangana, followed by Chandigarh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. These people also searched for ‘Donald Trump H1B visa,’ and ‘US birth citizenship’.

What Americans Searched The Most?

On the other hand, people in the Democratic-leaning states like Vermont and Minnesota, hugely searched ways to move to Canada, Scotland, Ireland, pointing to the likelihood of users in the US looking to move to another country. However, those in Republican-leaning states like Mississippi and Alabama, people searched for birth control options in their states, according to the Google Trends listings, the report said.

According to a report by The National, trends on Google showed a massive surge in searches from the US querying how to move away from the country. It said that around 76% of the searches were made in the US itself. These people also searched for the phrases ‘easiest countries to move to,’ ‘how to move to Ireland from US,’ and ‘how to move to move to New Zealand from US’.

As per the report, most of the searches were made from Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Oregon, Colorado, Washington, Tennessee and Minnesota states.

US people have searched about abortion and transgender/same sex rights in Canada, Scotland and other countries. It is expected that Trump could potentially clampdown on abortions, and increase clampdown on birth control measures.

US Presidential Elections 2024

Donald Trump was elected the 47th President of the United States on Wednesday, after the Wisconsin win put him over the 270 electoral vote line needed to clinch the presidency. Trump has won key swing states of Arizona, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Georgia, Michigan and North Carolina. Trump’s Republican party also won control of both houses of the US Congress, giving him additional power to push through measures on trade and other issues.

Since then, Trump is handing top roles for his future White House to a mix of political allies, firebrands and a few relatively conventional figures. Following his election victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump, each day is making a flurry of picks for his cabinet and other high-ranking administration positions.
