Mauni Amavasya, also known as Magh Amavasya, is one of the most significant days in the Hindu calendar. Falling on the new moon day of the Magh month, it holds immense spiritual importance. This year, Mauni Amavasya will be observed on Wednesday, January 29.

On this day, devotees consider bathing in the sacred river Ganges and making anonymous donations as acts of virtue. These rituals are believed to bring good health, mental peace, and wisdom.

The term ‘mauni’ derives from the Sanskrit word ‘mauna’, meaning silence. Observing silence on this day is believed to purify the soul. This year, Mauni Amavasya coincides with the Maha Kumbh, enhancing its significance even further.

Performing specific spiritual rituals on this day is said to help eliminate negative influences like Shani Dosh, Rahu-Ketu Dosh, or Saade Saati.

Auspicious Timings

Bathing and donating during Brahma Muhurat is considered particularly auspicious. On January 29, Brahma Muhurat will be from 5:25 am to 6:19 am. Along with this, Vijay Muhurta will be from 02:22 pm to 03:05 pm. At the same time, Amrit Kaal will be from 09:19 pm to 10:51 pm. For those unable to perform rituals during these times, they may bathe and donate anytime between sunrise and sunset.

Special Coincidence With Kumbh

This year, Mauni Amavasya carries special importance as it aligns with the Maha Kumbh. Both the Sun and Moon will be in Capricorn, and Jupiter’s position in the fifth house creates a highly auspicious setting. Siddhi Yoga formed on this day further amplifies its significance. The Amrit Snan held during the Maha Kumbh will add to the sanctity of this occasion.

Remedies for Shani Peeda, Saade Saati, and Rahu-Ketu Dosh

To seek relief from Shani Peeda, Saade Saati, or Rahu-Ketu Dosh, devotees are encouraged to visit a Shiva temple. Offerings may include a Rudraksha garland to Lord Shiva, along with incense, lamps, and the chanting of the following mantra:

“Rupam Dehi, Yasho Dehi, Bhogam Dehi Cha Shankar. Bhukti Mukti Phalam Dehi, Grihitvarghyam Namostute.”

The garland can then be kept in your purse or worn around your neck. Devotees also distribute items such as sesame sweets, black or blue blankets, woollen clothes, and other essentials to the needy.
