Mauni Amavasya, significant in Hindu culture, involves silence to stabilize the mind. Bathing and meditation at Triveni Sangam bestow ‘Akshay Punya’. Performing these rituals at home can offer similar benefits
Mauni Amavasya is of great importance in Hindu religion, believed to bring a state of purity and mental focus through vows of silence. The term ‘Mauni‘ refers to the practice of remaining speechless, which helps calm the mind. Meanwhile, ‘Amavasya‘ represents the union of the Sun and the Moon. Bathing and meditating at Triveni Sangam on this day are believed to grant eternal merit.
During the Maha Kumbh festival, the merging of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the unseen Saraswati in Prayagraj, along with the Amavasya Tithi, creates a sacred alignment. Taking a dip in the Sangam on this day is believed to cleanse the spirit and infuse life with positive energy.
Ritual at Home
For those looking to receive the benefits of bathing in the Ganges from home, Jalore-based astrologer Pandit Bhanu Prakash Dave shared with Local18 that if one cannot travel to Prayagraj, they can still experience the virtues of Mauni Amavasya while remaining at home.
To do so, one should mix some Gau Raj (cow dung ash) into the water during a morning bath. While bathing, recite the following mantra:
“Triveni Madhavam Som Bharadwajam Cha Vasukim.
Vande Akshay Vatam Shesham Prayag Tirthanayakam.”
Afterwards, put on fresh clothes following your bath. Hold 16 bundles of Durvakur in your right hand and meditate. Maintain silence while offering your mind at the feet of the Divine.
Purpose of Mauni Amavasya
Astrologer Dave told Local18 that the primary aim of Mauni Amavasya is to offer oneself to god by mastering one’s speech and thoughts. By staying home and engaging in sadhana while controlling the senses, individuals can direct their energy towards the right path. In this manner, one can attain the benefits of bathing at Triveni Sangam even while at home.
