Success is rarely achieved without encountering failure. The path to achievement often includes setbacks and challenges that test an individual’s resolve. Those who remain steadfast in the face of adversity, refusing to be deterred by fear or disappointment, are more likely to attain their goals. The expectation of instant success, particularly in business, is often unrealistic. It is through perseverance, learning from setbacks, and maintaining determination that individuals ultimately achieve lasting success.
Vivek Chand Sehgal, the wealthiest Indian residing in Australia, embodies this principle. Sehgal is the co-founder of the Samvardhana Motherson Group (formerly Madrasan Group). Beginning in the 1970s with a modest monthly income of Rs 2,500, he now helms a company with annual sales of Rs 1,05,600 crore.
Born in Delhi on September 28, 1956, Vivek Chand hails from a family of jewellers. He enjoyed a privileged upbringing and received a good education. He attended Birla Public School in Pilani and later graduated from Delhi University. Chand’s entrepreneurial journey commenced with silver trading, where he once sold a kilogram of silver for a mere Re 1.
In 1975, Vivek Chand, alongside his mother, Swarn Lata Sehgal, established the Madrasan Company. Initially engaged in silver trading, the business experienced a downturn and faced the threat of bankruptcy. Undeterred by this setback, Vivek decided to shift gears and venture into a new domain: manufacturing car parts.
Today, Vivek Chand Sehgal heads the most crucial division of the Madrasan Group – Samvardhan Madrasan Group. The company has become a global force in the automotive industry, producing essential car parts for some of the world’s leading automobile manufacturers.
As of January 2025, Forbes estimates Vivek Chand Sehgal’s net worth to be $5.5 billion. In 2021, he secured the 49th position on Forbes’ list of India’s wealthiest individuals. In recognition of his significant contributions to the business world, he was honoured with the prestigious EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award in India in 2016.
