Late industrialist Ratan Tata’s recently opened will shock his close friends and family since it mentioned a third of his remaining assets, valued at over Rs 500 crore, to a person whose relationship with him few knew, according to The Economic Times.

Mohini Mohan Dutta, a travel industry entrepreneur originally from Jamshedpur, is the unanticipated recipient. Sources familiar with the matter revealed that the Tata family and close associates were stunned by the revelation.

Mohini Mohan Dutta: More Details On Him

Although few people were aware of Mohini Mohan Dutta’s connection with Ratan Tata, those who knew him well said that he had been a reliable associate for many years. According to The Economic Times, his family had owned Stallion, a travel company that merged with Taj Services, a division of the Taj Group of Hotels, in 2013.

Mohini Mohan Dutta and his family owned 80 per cent of Stallion before the merger, with Tata Industries holding the remaining shares. The report also stated that he was a director of TC Travel Services, which was once a Thomas Cook affiliate.

Insiders close to the Tata Group claim that Mohini Mohan Dutta often referred to himself as being close to the Tata family. He had openly discussed his relationship with Ratan Tata during the latter’s October 2024 burial. “We first met in Jamshedpur at the Dealers’ Hostel when Ratan Tata was 24. He helped me out and built me up,” at the funeral for Ratan Tata in October 2024, Dutta recalled, according to Times of India (ToI).

Reportedly, Mohini Mohan Dutta received an invitation to join the December 2024 celebrations of Ratan Tata’s birth anniversary, which were hosted at NCPA in Mumbai and attended by family members and close friends.

Ratan Tata’s Philanthropic Efforts

In keeping with his lifetime dedication to philanthropic causes, the majority of Ratan Tata’s wealth has been allocated to philanthropy. It is thought that his half-sisters, who were designated beneficiaries, are also thinking about giving their portion to a good cause.

According to The Economic Times, Ratan Tata set up two organisations, the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation, and the Ratan Tata Endowment Trust, to direct a sizeable amount of his wealth toward charitable causes.

One of the biggest corporations in India, the Tata Group generates over $100 billion in revenue annually. At the age of 86, Ratan Tata passed away in October 2024.
