Team India endured an 184-run defeat at the hands of the Australian hosts at the MCG on Monday in the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 as the hosts took the lead for the first time in the series at 2-1.

The Aussies scalped seven Indian wickets in the final session to bowl the visitors out for 155 while chasing a target of 340 runs.

Star Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s wicket proved to be a turning point in the game as it left the tourists reeling at 140 for the loss of seven wickets. However, it also turned out to be a bone of contention as the young southpaw was dismissed due to a debatable decision.

Batting on 84, Jaiswal looked to pull Australian skipper Pat Cummins’ delivery only to miss making contact with the ball. While Cummins’ appeals for a caught-behind were turned down by the on-field umpire, the home team’s captain asked for a review as the issue went upstairs to third-umpire Sharfuddoula Saikat.

Despite the ‘Snicko’ showing no movement in the scale at the time the ball crossed the bat, Bangladeshi Saikat decided to declare the southpaw out, which forced the 23-year-old feel hard-done by the call and had a chat with the on-field umpire.

India, who had replied to Australia’s first innings total of 474 runs with a 369-run performance, were set a 340-run target as the Aussies put up 234 runs in the second innings.

India looked to be moving towards a draw as Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant stitched up an 88-run stand for the fourth wicket before the wicketkeeper-batter was dismissed by Travis Head as Mitchell Marsh pulled off a catch at long-on. India lost wickets in clusters thereon and were bundled out for a measly total of 155 runs.

The series resumes with the fifth and final Test of the tour slated to begin on the 3rd of January 2025 at the SCG.
