Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, will launch her Netflix rebrand on Tuesday with an eight-part cookery coming five years after Megxit.
In a promotional interview marking the television debut of ‘With Love, Meghan’, Meghan Markle once again expressed admiration for her ties to the Royal Family.
The late Queen Elizabeth II granted Prince Harry and Meghan the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex upon their 2018 wedding. However, calls have grown for the couple to be stripped of these titles following their criticisms of the Royals in their Oprah Winfrey tell-all interview, the six-part Netflix series Harry & Meghan, and Harry’s memoir Spare.
Despite their association with Sussex, the California-based couple has only visited the region once for a series of engagements seven years ago, drawing criticism. Yet, speaking to People magazine, Meghan now emphasizes the significance of the title to her.
“It’s our shared name as a family, and I guess I hadn’t realized how meaningful that would be to me until we had children,” she said. “I love that it’s something Archie, Lili, H, and I all have together. It means a lot to me.” She also described the Sussex name as “part of our love story.”
Meghan and Harry also hold the titles of Earl and Countess of Dumbarton, though they rarely use them and are not expected to pass them on to Archie. Under the terms of their Megxit agreement, they are prohibited from using the SussexRoyal brand, though their website remains active. Last year, they established The Office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, incorporating Meghan’s coat of arms.
Earlier this week, Meghan included Lilibet in an Instagram reel alongside Serena Williams to promote her latest projects. This followed controversy over a recent photo featuring three-year-old Lilibet for the As ever food brand, which sparked debate due to its logo’s similarity to a Majorcan town’s coat of arms and a New York clothing brand of the same name.
Although the couple typically keeps their children out of the public eye, Meghan spoke about them in her interview, which was conducted after she left Harry in Canada to spend Valentine’s Day alone during the Invictus Games. She recalled a touching moment when five-year-old Archie told her, “Mama, don’t work so hard.” She described it as “the sweetest thing.”
Following several failed ventures in the U.S., including an abandoned Spotify podcast and the 40×40 initiative, which never took off, Meghan is now pursuing entrepreneurship. However, she was forced to drop the American Riviera Orchard name for her lifestyle brand due to trademark opposition. Last month, she announced on Instagram that the brand would instead be called As ever.
She told People magazine: “When your children reach a certain age—when you’re not just playing in the sandbox with them, but also rediscovering your own—it’s incredibly joyful. As a woman, a mom, and a wife, being able to reconnect with yourself in a way that was always there, but you couldn’t fully focus on before, is a wonderful feeling.”
Meanwhile, Harry, whose Netflix series Polo flopped, makes occasional appearances in With Love, Meghan. The show was originally scheduled for release in January but was delayed due to the LA fires.
Royal author Phil Dampier commented: “It’s ironic that now, as Meghan launches her Netflix show and As ever brand, she is suddenly embracing the Duchess of Sussex title—despite having spent mere hours in the place. Without the Sussex title and the prestige of being a Royal, she’s just another minor celebrity chef or entrepreneur selling her wares.”
