On May 5, 2025 the iconic stairs of the The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City will come alive with the MET Gala. Every year, The Met Gala carpet brings together cultural figures and style icons from across a wide array of fields to celebrate and support art and fashion.
Over the years, the MET Gala stairs have played witness to exquisite Indian craftsmanship taking centre stage at the historic event. From Natasha Poonawalla, Alia Bhatt, Isha Ambani, Law Roach making heads turn in ensembles designed by Indian couturiers, here’s looking back at how Indian craftsmanship rule the MET Gala carpet.
Sabyasachi
The Sabyasachi saree won hearts not once but twice at The MET Gala. In 2022, Natasha Poonawalla graced the MET Gala carpet in an ornate yet whimsical gold tulle saree designed by Sabyasachi. The Gilded Glamour look resonated with the 2022 MET Gala theme, America: An Anthology of Fashion. The sari, which was Natasha’s vision from day one, was infused with Sabyasachi’s love for textiles and traditions with a hint of something new. It was also the first one-of-a-kind collaboration with Sabyasachi x Schiaparelli, where the latter complemented the Indian drape with a gold metal corset. Together, the ensemble made history!
Speaking of firsts, Sabyasachi Mukherjee made his MET Gala debut in 2024. He graced the iconic stairs in an embroidered cotton duster coat from the Sabyasachi Resort 2024 collection layered with tourmalines, pearls, emeralds and diamonds from Sabyasachi High Jewellery. In the same year, Alia Bhatt attended the MET Gala and draped a Sabyasachi couture sari with an exaggerated train. Interpreting the 2024 theme – The Garden of Time, the saree was hand embroidered with silk floss, beads, sequins, semi-precious stones and fringed with glass beads.
Rahul Mishra
Rahul Mishra set out to perceive the theme Garden of Time in Isha Ambani’s ensemble. While Isha couldn’t attend the MET Gala 2024, the couture piece received an overwhelming response when celebrity stylist Anaita Shroff Adajania shared the shoot images on Instagram. Isha wore a bespoke hand-embroidered couture sari gown, which took over 10,000 hours to complete. Crafted on a light, shimmery base, the embellishments included intricate thread embroidery, which is supplemented with materials such as rhinestones, sequins, bugle beads, zari, kundan and more and explores various ancient Indian techniques of embroidery, including fareesha, zardozi, nakshi, dabka and French knots, among others.
Rahul also designed for Zendaya’s stylist, Law Roac,h for the MET Gala 2024. Law Roach wore a custom AFEW Rahul Mishra at the Met Gala 2024. The ensemble featured a sculpted double breasted jacket embellished with three dimensional Rousseau-esque vegetal forms and glimmering flared trousers — all in ivory white. The stunning piece was created by a team of 35 artisans, tailors and designers in over one thousand human hours of time.
Gaurav Gupta Couture
Actor Mindy Kaling’s Melting Flower of Time couture gown, designed by Gaurav Gupta, graced the iconic stairs of the Met Gala 2024. The silhouette resonated with the Met Gala 2024 theme ‘The Garden of Time’, which is inspired by J.G. Ballard’s short story by the same name. The pastel hue and sculpted detailing of the statement couture piece evoked a surreal journey through loops of infinity, which represented Gaurav’s brand logo. Gaurav Gupta’s ensemble was styled by celebrity fashion stylist Molly Dickson, and the placement was done by Hema Bose of Maison Bose.
Outhouse Jewellery
For the MET Gala 2023 theme, which was Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, Alia Bhatt was styled in customised glovelettes designed by Outhouse Jewellery. Crafted in PETA-approved vegan leather, the ivory fingerless glovelettes channelled Karl’s iconism with Outhouse’s inventiveness. Handcrafted exclusively for Alia in 48 hours, the jewelled glovelettes featured the OH V monogram studded with clear crystals and pearls. Outhouse also designed a unique bow hair accessory featuring organic pearls, dual-tone crystal orbs and metallic spikes.
The dress code for this year’s MET Gala is ‘Tailored for You,’ a nod to the exhibition’s focus on suiting and menswear and we can’t wait to see Indian celebrities and designers interpret the theme through their design language.
